Fish living in fisheries are subject to all the normal pressures of those living in the wild. This includes the parasites that live on, or in, fish. Parasites are a common feature of all fisheries and generally cause little or no harm, when considered on a population level. However parasites can tell us a great deal about the health and wellbeing of a population of fish. For example high levels of parasites living on the skin can indicate a problem with high stock levels - the parasite is finding it too easy to find a new host. Another example would be high levels of the eye fluke or blackspot diseases indicating that there may be an issue in which high numbers of avian predators are coming into contact with the waterbody.
